Vanguard University of Southern California Lions
Vanguard University started as a small Bible College playing flag football against similar institutions. They converted to six-man tackle in 1957, then called the South California Bible College Deacons. They dominated the small conference. Later, the teams went to nine-man football. A player-coach who also was their QB, linebacker, and MVP advocated moving to 11-man football. The team was now called the Vanguard and played JVs, frosh, and small college teams. They struggled against larger opponents, with just 200 enrolled in their college. In 1959 they dropped football, but the name stuck.
