Saint Mary’s Gaels

Saint Mary's College of California Gaels

Saint Mary’s College began playing football in 1892, dropping the program in 1899 and reviving it in 1915. They were a powerhouse team from the late 1920s to 1950, when it was dropped during the Korean War due to budget issues until it started as a club in 1967. They played DIII football starting in 1970 and, in 1980, moved to DII. The program was compelled to move to DI by the NCAA in 1993. They played as a DI independent until budget issues made it impossible to compete with better-financed programs, forcing the administration to drop football in March of 2004.
