Loyola-Marymount Lions

Loyola-Marymount University Lions

Loyola-Marymount University began football play in 1921 and canceled it in 1951 due to the loss of students going to the Korean War and other factors, including budget. That same year, like USF, they canceled a trip to play Texas El Paso because of Jim Crow laws and not allowing LMU’s Black players and trainers to participate in the game. This cost them money. They started again in 1967 as a club team, having the best club record nationally in 1969, putting that team in the Hall of Fame. They played mostly local colleges until 1973, when budget claims resulted in cancelation. They even played a team from Osaka, their only win that season.

Total students: 10,179 (fall 2024), undergraduates 7,273, graduates 2,906

DI 14, but recently canceled six. Location: Los Angeles. They combined the all-male school, Loyola, with an all-female school, Marymount, to become Loyola-Marymount in 1973.
