Cal Western Westerners/USIU Gulls
USIU/Cal Western began its football program in 1956, playing a single game and losing against Cal Baptist. They continued to build a program, enlarging their schedule and playing a mix of NAIA and NCAA teams. Their last iteration was as a DII program. They moved to a new campus from the beautiful site on Point Loma in San Diego. They changed their name from Cal Western to the United States International University with campuses overseas. They went from being the Westerners to becoming the USIU Gulls. In 1979, they canceled their football program. The school changed its name to USIU in 1968 and moved from Point Loma’s campus to Scripps Ranch in 1973. Point Loma Nazarene University now owns the campus. USIU was a DI program in other sports, including ice hockey, for a while until financial difficulties forced them to drop sports for a few years and return to an NAIA level before going bankrupt and merging with Alliant University, which sponsors no sports.
